Dragged into Turbolasers Episode 22: A classic design revisited, Primaris Space Marines

Hope is a mistake.

With this episode we are joined by the extraordinarily talented Mr_Pink, from the blog Modern Synthesist, to talk about the newly revealed Primaris Space Marines. We talk at length about the models as well as the lore surrounding them.

  1. MY TALENTS ARE BEING GREATLY EXAGGERATED!

Thanks for the chance to chat, gentlemen! I was happy to be able to bring a Xenos player perspective to the debate on the new marines. I look forward to speaking again soon.

And if any resistant Marine players want an experienced, "my whole line was just rebooted!" shoulder to cry on, I'm here for you <3

  2. Gotta say this was probably my favorite episode to date and not just because of the amazing David Wier goof in the beginning. I think you all summed up my thoughts on the new developments quite well. For the first time in years I look forward to getting one of my armies on the table top again, it really is overwhelming how much GW has changed in the past year. Keep up the great work guys!

    1. The David thing was unexpected and great! I also agree that GW has really turned around in the last year or so, making me really hopeful for the future.

  3. Good listen, thanks. I'm really impressed by the new marines. One of the things that stands out to me is the new, lower belt. It seems to be flexible and in the art you can see the armour has a sort of 'muscle' under-suit, just like Guilliman and the Custodes. The lower belt gives a more 'modern' silhouette and visually lengthens the torso. In artwork the belt on marines was often drawn lower than it was on the figures and now the models follow that trend.

In many ways, the current marines (being iterations of early 90s metals) are a hang over from early Jes Goodwin figure proportions - male or female figures, he always went for very wide shoulders, super narrow waists and a compressed torso*. Belts were on waists rather than the more recent tendency for belts around hips (see how low the belt is on Adam's marine!). Add in that the multipart plastic had to have ball sockets at the waist and you have a situation where the waist is too narrow for the hips. The ball socket seems to have been dropped as a requirement so finally the armour articulates properly with torso movement (see the snapfit figures from the 40k paint set to see plastic marines whose torsos actually articulate - best plastic marines until now).

The new figures also make the Deathwatch marines look particularly daft - in order to make them slightly taller they just lengthened the hip area, further raising the belt so now it brings to mind 80s swimsuits. Thankfully a lot more work has gone into these new guys.

*I love this look as for me it makes great wee caricatured figures. I shamelessly stole it for my fantasy elf.

    1. Yeah, I am quite impressed with them too, it is clear a lot of thought and effort went into them, and they did not just slightly modify the standard marine. I feel they did a good enough job, that on first glance you might not realize a lot of the changes, because it reads as a Space Marine. I also like the "muscle" suit thing too, as well as the better belts. The move away from the ball and socket thing is good too. It resulted in some bad looking models if you were not careful, ha ha.

  4. A really good podcast! One of the best in my opinion. Mr_Pink seems like a great guy.

I like the Grimdark stuff a lot too (and I don't really like the story behind these marines) but I can ignore it and keep to my grimdark hobby. It's not that hard ignoring these storylines, I'll just buy them as normal marines and convert them myself.

P.S. Don't diss those reliquaries or I will have to personally burn you at the stake you heretics ;)

    1. Yeah, we will certainly get some and try to make normal marines with them too. Maybe we will even use the reliquary?!

  5. Excellent episode as usual. I really like the new models , and though the fluff/lore is terrible I agree with you that it is probably the best possible compromise GW could have come up with. I'm not sure how I'm going to integrate these new models into my own gaming though; I'm sure I'll think of something though.

    1. Yeah, I agree that this was probably the easiest way for GW to make the most people happy. I feel we will likely start integrating these guys into our stuff via Inq28 stuff, slowly making a few models and go from there.
