Dragged into Turbolasers Episode 3: The Wulfen, Frostgrave, and a Tribute to Wayne England

In memory of Wayne England, a visionary.

We start this episode by talking about the new Space Wolf and Wulfen releases for Warhammer 40,000, and reflect on how they might be used in conversions.  We conclude our discussion of Mantic Game’s Walking Dead miniature game from last episode, now that the Kickstarter is underway.  Next, we talk at length about Osprey Publishing’s Frostgrave, focusing on its combat system as compared to other games, specifically Malifaux.  Finally, we talk about what the late Wayne England’s artwork means to us, and how it shaped Warhammer 40,000.  We also describe a model we are working on in his honor for our contribution to the Pilgrym Project.

  1. Great episode guys, when will the x files end ;) will be nice to hear the whole team again. Not that Brad isn't an excellent guy to listen to. Have you considered having guests for episodes now and then? Might make for an interesting feature to add occasionally.

Your comments on the wulfen and walking dead are pretty much spot on. I can't say I'm a fan of either one.

As for ideas for future shows, I would love to hear more from you on different smaller companies. What you like, don't like etc. There are so many different ones out there, some really crappy ones trying to steal ideas from others and some excellent and wildly imaginative ones as well.

    1. Good news, the x files is finally over, he he. And Greg is back in the podcast! We primarily talk about Deathwatch in the next episode though, so not much from smaller companies. We plan to talk about other companies more in the future, however! Having played a lot of Kingdom Death recently, we have quite a bit to say about it. And we plan to keep playing Frostgrave.

I think having guests would be great, and it was something that we have been considering trying to start. As a matter of fact, I feel you would be an excellent first guest! I would love to hear more about your slaanesh warband you are working on!

    2. Wow, that is quite an honour! Can you contact me on the Ammobunker, I would love to discuss the idea further.

Great to hear Greg is back :) I'm really curious to hear what you all think about KD. You seemed a bit sceptical about the gameplay in an earlier pod. Most bloggers seem to love it, I wonder if that has somethibg to do with the hefty pricetag. Paying 400$ kinda forces you to like a game, even if only to not feel like a fool.

    3. Yeah, I am happy that I did not pay the full retail cost on KD. The KS price I paid was substantially lower. It sits at an interesting place. So much of it is so good. The production values are so high in almost every facet of the game and the concept is so strong, with great imagery. It stumbles the most in the actual game department. While there are certainly a bunch of interesting ideas present in game design, it does not take advantage of all the advances in game design that have occurred in the last 10 years. Many of the design choices simply are not fun to play, and instead of being hard in a rewarding challenging way, it is hard in a random punishing way that forces you to constantly repeat things. There is too much to cover here, ha ha. It will be a great subject for a upcoming podcast!
